May Gardening
-----------------------------------------------------------------

Welcome to another exciting edition of the Yates Garden Club e/Newsletter!

May is the month that completes the transition from the balmy days of autumn to the cold of winter.
Many plants relish this change of season, which means there's still plenty of jobs to be
done in the garden.
Read our article on May Gardening
http://www.yates.co.nz/garden-calendar/may/
for a list of things to do this month.

We've been very busy here at Yates, developing and tailoring products to suit gardeners' needs.
Our new contemporary Tuscan Edge range of pots have been designed with the twenty-first
century homeowner very much in mind.

It's Mother's Day on May 11th, so don't forget to spoil mum by giving her something a little different this year!
Choosing the perfect Mother's Day gift can sometimes be a bit of a challenge,
but why not think about giving Mum a perfumed plant for the garden or a pot?

Week 1: May Gardening
-----------------------------------------------------------------

Flowers to sow in May.
Sow seeds of Yates pink paper daisies now and, before you know it, you'll have a meadow of soft pink
flowers.

Veggies to sow in May.
Broad beans grow easily from seed but there are three special things you should remember about these
cool season veggies:
1. The pods of broad beans won't develop until the weather starts to warm up in spring.
2. Pods should be picked when they're young and tender. Don't let them get old and tough.
3. After harvest, dig the nitrogen-rich plants in to improve the soil.

Week 2: A Fragrant Gift for Mothers Day
-----------------------------------------------------------------

Choosing the perfect Mother's Day gift can sometimes be a bit of a challenge, but why not think about giving Mum a perfumed plant
for the garden or a pot? That way she'll have a fragrant reminder of your love for years to come.

Week 3: Don't Waste Autumn Leaves
-----------------------------------------------------------------

If you have deciduous trees (they're the ones that lose their leaves in winter), you're sure to have found your May garden
awash with fallen foliage.

It's tempting to sweep the leaves into a heap and toss them in the bin, but this would be an almost criminal waste of one of
Mother Nature's most valuable gifts. At the very least the leaves should be raked up and spread over garden beds to form an instant
layer of organic mulch.

Week 4: Preparing the garden for winter
-----------------------------------------------------------------

Winter can be a hard time for plants, especially in cold areas.
And even in the warmer parts, plants can find the winter months hard going. Growth slows right down and problems become more
evident when a plant's in its cold- weakened state.

But there are many things you can do to help your garden cope with the cooler months, so here's a timely checklist for
preparing your garden for winter:

New Stylish Tuscan Edge Pots
-----------------------------------------------------------------

This new range of pots have been designed with the twenty-first century homeowner very much in mind.
The fashionable colors and styling of these pots make them perfect for show ing off
flowering plants, herbs and balcony vegetables.
And, while the 'edge' in the name describes the contrasting colour band that
decorates the top of each pot, it could just as easily refer to their 'edgy' design.
The new Tuscan range are available in troughs, square and round pots in a variety of colors.
